I found some videos on YouTube for a project that some called a cupcake journal, and I liked the idea. All of the ones I saw were made from purchased lace doilies, but that just wouldn't do for me, so I started looking for crochet patterns. Unfortunately, since I haven't done much crochet for quite awhile my pattern library has lots of knit, but the crochet seems to be hiding from me. I purchased a lovely book in April "99 Little Doilies" by Patricia Kristoffersen and got started. The brown flower on the front cover is the only one that did not come from this book,it is part of a purse pattern from Piecework magazine by Interweave. The largest doily in my journal measures 6.5inches in diameter and it is all held together with a binder ring with ribbons and lace ties on.

We haven't had a call for a May Quiltie swap on the Byhandartists group yet, but I am hoping we will. In any case I've been wanting to do a project like this and now seemed like a good time. I stitched assorted black and white ribbons to my base fabric and black embroidery thread stitches at the adjoining edges. The figure is rubber stamped on coffee stained cotton, fused to another piece of cotton and die cut. This is stitched over a glittery sheer ribbon. The sentiment is also stamped on coffee stained cotton and the embellishment is a piece of old jewelry. I just completed my original planned April quiltie which I was working on when I got distracted with the idea in the previous post. I stamped the egg on a baby wipe which I used for clean-up at Gellie print party. I then fused the egg image onto a fabric sample and cut it out. The background fabric is another fabric sample and the eggs are stitched down with seed beads. The quilt layers are joined together with a bead stitch edging. I added an embroidered rickrack trim to the bottom and top of the quiltie. Now the big question is which will I send to my swap partner. That is the difficult decision I have given myself to make, what do you think? The Byhandartists Yahoo group is continuing with the monthly quiltie swap so I decided to play with a raw edge quilt using 4 layers of home decor weight fabric samples. The ruler segment at the bottom is rubber stamped on fabric as is the dress form. This is embellished with a button and a hand charm. The gold colour lace along the edge is knit with 10/3 cotton on 1.75mm needles. I am not yet sure if this will be my submission for the swap but I sure had fun playing today. Please feel free to leave a comment and let me know what you think. We are continuing the monthly quiltie swap on the byhandartists Yahoo group and since I have been having a great time playing with beads since my cataract surgery, I did bead knitted patches and joined them together. I hand quilted at the seam lines of each patch. For the back of my quiltie I used Oriental Odyssey by Ro Gregg from my fabric stash. Now, since Therese added the criteria of using green in this month quiltie, I had to go back to the drawing board and my actual quiltie didn't get mailed yesterday. It will be in the mail by Monday. I started working on a studio banner on February 21 and have done quite a bit so far. As you can see in the photos the elements moved around some from the first design layout. I have a few more embellishments to stitch on and need to finish the beaded fringe along the bottom.
This is a small -3.5 inch by 3.5 inch image on watercolour paper using hot-glue blobs as masks and Dylusions spray inks and mounted on a 7 inch square canvas painted with black gesso. I did several pieces in this method and this ended up being my favourite. Now how about a game? I spun the image in four directions, now tell me what you see by leaving a comment.
We are continuing with the Quiltie Swap on the byhandartists Yahoo group and this month's theme is hearts.
For the background on my square I used a wool blend fabric and diecut a heart from felt which I stitched to the upper right corner, outlined with red seed beads and filled in with an assortment of red beads. I knit the edging which is on the left and lower edges with size 30 cotton and 1.75mm needles. The word "cherish id a Quietfire Design stamp on cotton fabric. The back id pieced from fabric samples that were in my stash and my name is stamped with an alphabet stamp set on cotton fabric. Here I am again with another quiltie to continue with the Byhandartist's quiltie swap. For the January swap I scanned one of my painted backgrounds and printed on fabric. I used black beads to outline some of the doodle and stamped images then added a button and some random seed beads in the background. This one goes to Daphne, I hope she likes it.
We are continuing with the Byhandartists Quiltie swap in November and this time there is a theme of Christmas/Winter. I used a linen-look fabric sample and placed a small piece of furry yarn along the right edge and stitched the mesh part down with 2 cut glass beads. The furry stuff with mesh is Starbella Arctic which is a knitting yarn for making ruffled scarves. I appliqued a green silk flower with the same beads and the a red flower attached that with drizzle and beaded drizzle stitches which I just learned. I am quite happy with the results, but since I have some other ideas I want to try I am not sure if this is the one I'll mail out in November, we'll see.
